brian furlongSubject: Best way to handle creating a document from XSD
Author: brian furlong

I am a newbie and am not sure what is the best/quickest way to do something.
I have an xsd which is quite structured (up to about 5 or 6 levels). I need to present an xml document conforming to this xsd into a single human readable document (html or txt will be fine, it will be viewed in a web browser). The data is all about a single individual and some of it may not occur in the xml instance while other parts of the tree may have various occurences.

I have looked at the XML report option which looks like it might work but after seeing the excellent webinar today I am wondering if there may be a better way to simply automate this task to get a resut very quickly. Then perhaps we can "finesse" the document a bit later to enhance the styling via CSS maybe to make it more attractive.

The task is really to get a proof of concept quickly, showing the xml in a basic readable format.

How would the experts go about this please?

If your problem is that the source XML doesn't have all the optional items that the schema defines, you can specify the XSD in the XML report source panel, and define the basic layout of the report using the schema structure.
Then, when previewing the report, you will specify the XML instance to be used as real source.
Once you have the basic layout working, you can generate the equivalent XSLT stylesheet and modify the CSS/fine tuning the final HTML using the XSLT editor.

Hope this helps,
Alebrto
