Can any one help me if it possible to convert excel(xls) to xml using xsl.
If possible please help me how to read data from xls from an xsl stylesheet.

Hi Seema,
you could save the spreadsheet from Excel using the SYLK format; then you can use the adapters provided by Stylus Studio to convert this format into an XML representation that the XSLT can manipulate.

Thanks, but can you confirm that xsl cannot manipulate a xls.

Hi Seema,
XLS is a binary format, and XSLT can only process XML or (in XSLT 2.0 only) text sources.

Stylus Studio relaxes this limitation via adapters that convert several text and binary format into an XML representation (see http://www.stylusstudio.com/docs/v62/d_flatfileconversion10.html); however, the XLS Excel format is not in this list, so you have to save your spreadsheet into either SYLK, CSV, dBase.

Can I use a csv, instead of an xls. Its similar to a text document. would this help.

Hi Seema,
you can use a CSV file, even if a SYLK file is better (it is a text format like CSV, but it has the advantage of being designed to represent a spreadsheet, while the CSV is better suited to represent tabular data).
In both cases, you should:
1) create your XSLT stylesheet in Stylus Studio
2) when asked for the main XML document, browse to the .csv or .slk file, check the "Convert to XML using adapter" checkbox and click Open
3) in the following dialog, pick either the "Comma-Separated Values" or "Symbolic Link Format" and click Ok
4) you will see the structure of XML representation of the text file in the right pane; at that point, design your stylesheet and run it.
