Judy HansonSubject: Preview Problems

I have 2 problems:

1. My XML document is validated against its DTD, but when I logon to the Internet and try to view it on my browser (Internet Explorer 6.0), I get the following message:
"The XML page cannot be displayed
"Cannot view XML input using XSL style sheet. Please correct the error and then click the Refresh button, or try again later.
"Access is denied. Error processing resource 'C:\xml\isochars\isolat1.pen'. Error processing resource 'file:///Z:/TECHMAN/2...

%ISOlat1; %ISOpub; %ISOgrk1; %ISOgrk3; %ISOnum; %ISOtech;
---------^

These are .pen files which we obtained from the U.S. Navy specifically for its XML documents. I've doublechecked the pathname called out in the DTD for these files and it is correct. I've also copied the .pen files into the same folder as my XML document, plus a few other locations just for good measure, but still get the same error message. I've also removed the style sheet reference from the XML document but still get the same error message.

2. The second problem is that when I preview my XML document using Stylus (click on XML, then Preview in Internet Explorer...), I get a different error message:

"The XML page cannot be displayed
"Cannot view XML input using XSL style sheet. Please correct the error and then click the Refresh button, or try again later.
"The system cannot locate the resource specified. Error processing resource 'file:///C:/Documents and Settings/hanson/Local ... "

This second method also creates several temp files.

So what am I doing wrong? And why do I get 2 different error messages, depending on how I preview my XML document?

Thanks for your help,
Charlie

Charlie,

It seems like that one of the file references a document on drive z: and throws "access denied".

Could you please zip your all files and post it?

For question 2, you are getting an error because Stylus Studio creates a temporary file to feed the IE preview therefore all relative paths do not resolve.

Charlie,

I changed the path to the DTD as follow
<!DOCTYPE docnavy-etm SYSTEM "050512navy-etm.dtd">

then I copied *.pen in c:\xml\isochars and i was able to open the file with IE.

You did not include the XSLT file so I had to comment out the stylesheet PI
<?xml-stylesheet type="text/xsl" href="docnavy-etm.xsl"?>

Hope this helps

Although I had already tried your suggestions, I tried them again today, but still received error messages. Previewing through Stylus Studio yielded the following message:
"The system cannot locate the resource specified. Error processing resource '050512navy-etm.dtd'. Error processing resource...
<!DOCTYPE docnavy-etm SYSTEM "050512navy-etm.dtd"> "

Previewing directly from the IE browser yielded this message:
"Access is denied. Error processing resource 'C:\xml\isochars\isolat1.pen'. Error processing resource 'file:///Z:/TECHMAN/2...

%ISOlat1; %ISOpub; %ISOgrk1; %ISOgrk3; %ISOnum; %ISOtech;
---------^

Any other ideas on what I should do?

Charlie

As I explained before running the IE preview from Stylus Studio will not work because the DTD reference uses a relative path, but you should be able validate without problems. f you need to see the document in a tree reppresenation you can swicth to the XML tree view.

In the second case given the error you still have a reference to a file on drive Z: that may not be available on your machine

Error processing resource 'file:///Z:/TECHMAN/2...

unzip the attached archive and open Chapter4.xml with IE as experiment

Okay. First I extracted only the Chapter4.xml file from your zipped archive & tried viewing it in IE. No luck. So then I extracted all the other files from your zipped archive & tried viewing it in IE, and it worked! Thanks! What did you do? What is different?
