Hi all,

i have a file like this one and i need to output it using fo. I need to apply templates to the descr bit and then to the <h3> element.


<descr> &lt;h3&gt;Assessment Categories for &lt;/h3&gt; </descr>


Can anyone tell me how to do this, at the moment the text node is just output to the pdf as is.

any ideas

What you have inside the "descr" element is not mark-up but text, no apply-template can match it.

You will need match "descr" then use sub-string in order to get "Assessment Categories for"

isn't there some sort of node set extension functionality or a parser that can be used, I have been reading about them but cannot seem to get the definitive answer....

i know by adding namespaces it is possible to use extensions ie exslt.org etc

anyone got anyideas

If you are using Saxon 8.x, there is the saxon:parse extension function.
It is not portable.

anyone got any links to processing html that is embedded in xml when needing to output to xsl-fo

Ivan's reply was correct; once you escape it the content is no
longer XML but text. XSLT processors are ill-equipped to deal
with that, since they depend on the previous step, the XML
parser, to deal with it. They really only 'see' the parsed
XML, broken into elements and attributes and text and such.

If you want to see what attempts others have made, with varying
degrees of success/failure, try this query on Google:

parsing escaped xml site:stylusstudio.com inurl:xsllist

This will search the XSL-List archives.

thats alright peps, i solved it and what i solved was way more complex than that, its funny how most people say it cannot be done....

The job that i am currently doing is as a lead developer for a government department, before i started they said that the project couldn't be done, so they brought me in (a mathematician) to solve the problem

What I have learnt from all of this...is that people who know how to do stuff are not in this forum, they are out partying: content with the knowledge that they can do it, it is only people who do not know how to do it that hang out here....exceptions to the stylus team

I am not trying to be rude, but most of the posts point you in the wrong direction...flame war!
