I am trying to use Stylus Studio to cerate j2ee web.xml deployment desriptors. I can create ones that work, but they won't validate within Stylus Studio, and I don't seem to get the benefit of intelligent prompting on the choices at each step.

I start with this beginning to the document, copied form another source.

<web-app xmlns="http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/j2ee"
xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"
xsi:schemaLocation="http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/j2ee/web-app_2_4.xsd"
version="2.4">

When I do try to validate, I get a FATAL ERROR, mentioning that the schemaLocation attribute does not contain pairs of values.

I must be doing something wrong and would appreciate any guidance.

As the error suggests, the schemaLocation attribute needs two parts: namespace URI and location of the schema that covers that namespace.

You can try:

<web-app xmlns="http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/j2ee"
xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"
xsi:schemaLocation="http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/j2ee http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/j2ee/web-app_2_4.xsd"
version="2.4">
