Ramon FelcianoSubject: Fata error when launching 2.0.06
Author: Ramon Felciano

Hi --

I just downloaded and installed 2.0.06. When launching the application, I select the default XSL and XML files and get the following error dialog:

"fatal error: Cannot create document object"

followed by an application crash. Happens if I try to create new files as well. I downloaded and installed twice.

Any suggestions?

Ramon M. Felciano

What version of Internet Explorer are you running? We've heard this from one other user and have not been able to isolate it. I'd appreciate your help.

Hello,

I am also having this problem. I was using a 1.x version of Stylus that came with eXcelon 2.1 beta 2. I had only a few minor problems with this version. On friday I upgraded to 2.1 general release (eval edition) and Stylus stopped working. It begins with the open file dialog and as soon as the OK button is pressed, I get an application exception. I am using Internet Explorer 5.50.3825.1300 128 bit. I am running WinNT Workstation Service Pack 5 w/192 MB ram Pentiumm III 500 MHz.

The Dr. Watson log says its an access violation (0x0000005) Address 0x70c439a5. I have attached the Dr. Watson log file.

I'd suggest upgrading to the latest Stylus evaluation version (downloadable from our website). If you continue to have problems, try upgrading your JRE to 1.2.2.

I downloaded Stylus again - but it still gives me 2.0.06. Is there a later version?

I was thinking the eXcelon distribution you installed included 2.0.05. Try upgrading your JRE to 1.2.2.

I have both JDK 1.1.8 and JRE 1.2.2 on my machine. How do I get Stylus to use the JRE 1.2? I tried putting jre1_2\bin in my path and jre1_2\lib\rt.jar in my classpath. It still crashes in the same place.

Take a look at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\JavaSoft\Java Runtime Environment\CurrentVersion

OK, I have now downloaded Java 2 JRE 1.3 from Sun. My registry contains

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\JavaSoft\Java Runtime Environment\1.3
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\JavaSoft\Java Runtime Environment\1.3.0

Still getting the Stylus exception. Is there something special about JRE 1.2? Do I have to do anything beside install the JRE?

No, you don't need to do anything other than install the JRE. There could be a problem with your IE5.5 beta. If you create a new stylesheet and don't load an XML file, do you still get a crash after clicking ok?

Yes. Any combination of [new stylesheet|existing stylesheet] and [existing XML file|no XML file] causes the crash. It also doesn't matter whether I get these inputs from the file system or from eXcelon servers. Stylus lets me browse these sources with no problems. But as soon as the OK button is pressed, the exception occurs.

I was able to use the previous version of Stylus with this same IE 5.5 beta. So I am not as suspicious of this being the source of the problem as I might otherwise be.

More info on this...

I de-installed eXcelon 2.1GA (and with it Stylus 2.0). I then reverted back to eXcelon 2.1 beta 2, and although eXcelon server itself will not load for me anymore, I am able to load Stylus 1.5 beta (1.5.00) without error. I was able to run the stylesheet I had been developing through my test XML files without error.

The problem is almost certainly the IE 5.5 beta. There are heavy dependencies on IE5 in Stylus 2.x that did not exist in 1.x.

I reverted to IE 5.00.2919.6307 and now Stylus 2.0 works.
