David ReesSubject: namespaces in xpath
Author: David Rees
Date: 02 Nov 2005 08:06 PM
Is there a way to copy an xpath and namespaces together? I had thought in XPath 2.0 something like the following was possible, but I can't find anything to support this and it doesn't work in the XPath bar of SS. So did I just dream it up ;)?
xmlns:xenc="http://www.w3.org/2001/04/xmlenc#" xmlns:ds="http://www.w3.org/2000/09/xmldsig#" document::operationInformation/ap:operationInformation[1]/ap:webService[1]

Thanks,

d

David,
you mean being able to do something similar to what Stylus Studio exposes in Tree and Grid XML editing (Copy XPath to Clipboard), but adding the definition of the namespaces?

We could do that, but it would work only as a reference for you, as there is no way in XPath to declare a namespace-prefix mapping as part of the expression; virtually all XPath implementations do allow you to do that from the API of course.

That's why Stylus Studio copies an XPath expression containing namespaces as:
/a/*[local-name()='b' and namespace-uri()='myNSURI'][1]

Hi David

Switch to tree view in the XML editor and right click on the node you need to select, then click "Copy XPath Query to Clipboard" you will get an absolute XPath including the namespace.

Hope this helps
