Thiago KinoshitaSubject: Converting a DB table into XML
Author: Thiago Kinoshita
Date: 05 Jul 2005 02:00 PM
Hi,

I have a table in a relational database and would like to convert it into XML. The table looks like this:

EQP_ID EQP_NAME CONN_ID CONN_NAME
-----------------------------------------
01 EQP01 02 PWR
01 EQP01 03 TX

I understand that a simple ".conv" converter with the SQL output or a SQL/XML query would retrieve the following:
<row>
<EQP_ID>01</EQP_ID>
<EQP_NAME>EQP01</EQP_NAME>
<CONN_ID>02</CONN_ID>
<CONN_NAME>PWR</CONN_NAME>
</row>
<row>
<EQP_ID>01</EQP_ID>
<EQP_NAME>EQP01</EQP_NAME>
<CONN_ID>03</CONN_ID>
<CONN_NAME>TX</CONN_NAME>
</row>

However, I would like the output to be something like this:
<row>
<equipment ID="01" NAME="EQP01">
<connector ID="02" NAME="PWR"/>
<connector ID="03" NAME="TX"/>
</equipment>
</row>

Is it possible? How can I do this?
Thanks,
Thiago.

Hi Thiago,

With the SQL/XML (DB to XML Data Source module) you can shape the XML result using the table columns as elements and/or attributes

SELECT
XMLELEMENT(name "row",
XMLATTRIBUTES(t.EQP_ID, t.EQP_NAME, t.CONN_ID, t.CONN_NAME)
)
FROM mytable t

If you like to create dynamic elements like in the example you posted you have to post-process the XML using XSLT.
