I know that this can be done if the files are being imported from a Source Control system, but not from a flat file system.

You can use drag&drop from Microsoft Explorer or from the Stylus Studio File Explorer (in version 6 release 3) to add multiple documents or entire directories to the active project.

Thanks. Though the drag and drop works, I can't get the file browser option to work properly.
It would still be nice to see this natively supported in the application.

I agree, it would be nice to be able to select multiple files to be opened.
Also, it would be nice to be able to see the last changed date on files, sort columns, and the ability to re-size the Open dialog box. I find it frustrating to work with the existing limited function Open dialog.
The solution of using Windows Explorer to open files is, I think, embarassing to SS.

I'm using Professional version 8r2 and you still can only add a single file at a time. It's so simple to implement (or should be with a good GUI toolkit), you just specify multiple selection instead of the default single selection for the dialog. You can then select multiple singles with Ctrl-left-click and/or multiple sequential with Shift-left-click.
Frankly, I don't understand why it's gone for 2+ versions without being changed!;O
