When I tried to convert the attached file to xml using the html to xml wizard really strange things happend. Changing the extension to html didn't help.

I guess you are referring to several Japanese-like characters and symbols being displayed. The problem is that the tau.xhtml document you have attached claims it uses UTF-16 encoding, but in reality it uses a single byte encoding, ASCII or UTF-8.

If you remove the bogus encoding declaration, you will see what you would expect. BTW, the document is already an XML document, so going through the HTML-to-XML wizard will only resolve the tau reference and expose the tau character. You can open the same document directly as XML.
