From their january newsletter: "Our friends at DataDirect Technologies, a top provider of components for connecting software to data, have made a set of predictions about XML for 2005. Top on the list--XQuery will move steadily towards approval as an official standard by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), and begin to fundamentally change the way enterprise software applications are built. The prediction is based on customer surveys the company conducts of uses of its Stylus Studio, an XML integrated development environment. "Over half the respondents are using XQuery," Jerry King, vice president and general manager for XML products at DataDirect, told 5 Minute Briefing. According to King, XQuery is following the same pattern that SQL followed in the early 1980s. "I remember the SQL wave and it is just like that," King said. He anticipates that the XQuery standard could be completed by the end of the year. Meanwhile, developers' acceptance coupled with support from major RDBMS vendors will be the main factor driving its adoption."
