Network AdministratorSubject: SS 4.6 103t - 2 crashes in 6 hours
Author: Network Administrator
Date: 30 Apr 2003 09:17 AM
I am currently evaluating XML Schema and XSLT editors and will purchase one in the near future for an XML-based documentation project.

I had a long-list of 10, Stylus Studio has made it to the short list.
I like SS a lot more than some of the others, including XML Spy, BUT it has crashed on me twice already, which is not endearing.

I am pleased to see that there is an active bug-fixing effort going on, and your response to this posting may swing it in your favour.

Below are my evaluation notes and I include the log file as requested:

4. Sonic Stylus Studio 4.6
==========================

Overall
-------

Decision: Shortlist.
Notes: Meets principal requirements but has potential stability problem.

Bad Points:

1. Not stable. 2 fatal crashes in 6 hours with simple documents, plus Property window errors.
2. Too much typing when drop-down lists could be provided.
3. Lack of means to copy elements etc in Diagram view. Can't right-click/copy or ctrl-drag - very pre-Win95.
4. Doesn't actually create PDFs so slightly misleading blurb, even if technically accurate.

Good Points:

1. Clear interface.
2. Excellent help with good explanations and useful references to W3C docs.
3. Helpful validation error messages.
4. Validation is more thorough than XML Spy.
5. Clear Schema documentation output.
6. Fast. cf XML Spy is sluggish on 2GHz CPU.

Crashes
-------

30429a
Not sure what I did - right-clicked or right-dragged something I think.

30429b
Deleting a blank attribute in top half of Diagram view.
Shortly before the crash, the Property window seemed to lose its tabs.

Thanks; we are looking into the problems you have reported.

BTW do you have more information about this point you mention:

RE Lack of drop-down menus:

Attached is a simple example. I have started to create an element (in Diagram view) consisting of a sequence of elements. I have defined the global element and the modifier and am in the process of creating the first of the sequential elements, which will be a reference to an element that already exists.

In SS 4.6 I have to type the name, in XML Spy 5 for example I can choose an existing element from the list presented. I noticed this inconvenience in several other places although I didn't make a specific note of them. It stood out particularly because XML Spy was the previous editor I was using.

I have created the same scenario in both and attach screenshots from both to demonstrate.

Something else I noticed was that the move up/down buttons are disabled in this view for global elements - it would be very useful to be able to change their order without having to cut/paste the code. I don't really want to touch the code if a click will do the job for me. Alphabetically by type would be good...
