Hi

I'm working on a documentation project which involves thousands of pages. Instead writing it on HTML I'd rather do it in XML and the generate HTML/PDF output.
So the goal is to edit a huge documentation project in XML and get an HTML website or PDF documents.
Is Stylus Studio suitable for this purpose ?
Can it handle projects with thousands of XML related files ?
We need basic editing capabilities (normal text/bullets/numbering/bold/italic etc), links, images. Also if pages are moved in the project is there any chance to update the links ?
Can SS be used by non-XML experts ?
Does it support templates, contents generation ?

SS is a great tool but you may need more understanding of the task at hand. What you want to do (restating for clarity) is write XML documents and then generate HTML/PDF files...SS can definetely help you. Your process will be to write the XML documents (SS has an XML, XSL (and a WYSIWYG XSL) editors built in plus the capabilities to do post XSLT processing (XSL-FO for you PDFs) but you will have to do some setting up to accomplish that. I have not done any XSL-FO processing with SS but I'm sure their staff will be more than willing to help you out. I believe they have a tutorial or webinar archived on the site. Check it out.

Certainly, Stylus can be used by non-XML experts. It is also a great way to get started learning XML.

Stylus is going to save you a significant amount of time and effort. I'd be happy to discuss the entire project with you and provide more specific recommendations.

As another response indicated, there is an example of XSL-FO. If you have a copy of Stylus running,

1. use the File-->Open menu,
2. navigate up to Stylus, then down to
examples/XSLFormattingObjects
3. open the catalog.xsl

If you press the green-triangle in the upper panel (with xsl in it), Stylus will generate the result and execute the post-processor to generate PDF, then start Acrobat!
