Eliot KimberSubject: Font Doesn't Change in XML Editor
Author: Eliot Kimber

I am using SS 4.0, build 091c. When I use the options->Editor Format for the XML editor, no matter what font I choose, the actual font used in the editor is unchanged. I can change the font size but not the font. I've tried Arial, Courier New, and several oddball fonts, just to check.

This is on Win2K with all the latest updates installed.

Thanks,

Eliot

I can't reproduce this problem.

Are you sure the XML file you are opening doesn't contain characters that
cannot be displayed by the font you are choosing as the default font?
The font you set in Options|Editor Format is the default; but if XML Editor
discovers that font cannot render all the characters in the open document,
it will switch to another one which can render the document.

Take a look at the active font in Edit|Change Font (the bold one is
active); which one is it?

I take it back; I was running a version more recent that BL91c; I can see
the problem you are describing in 91c.

We are releasing an updated build in a couple of days; that will fix this
issue.

Thanks,
Minollo

I have around four XSD schemas that whenever I look at them in SS always come up in something like "MS Mincho" and the list of fonts I can use is greatly restricted e.g. it doesn't include "Courier New"

Is this related to what you just described?

If it is, how can we identify the offending character?

Yes.

Try using find with regular expressions; enter "[^\x00-\xFF]" in the find
string and check the "Regular Expression" check box. That will find a
character out of the 0-FF range. If that doesn't find anything, you can try
"[^\x00-\x80]" to find anything out of the 7 bit ascii table.

Thanks, that did the trick. Someone must have used another editor which had left behind out-of-range quote and apostrophe characters.

Perhaps you could add this little peculiarity to SS' help, or the FAQ here.
