Tim DallmannSubject: SourceSafe user in project files
Author: Tim Dallmann
Date: 27 Feb 2002 04:56 PM
I noticed that the userid used to connect to sourcesafe is being stored in the .prj file. This doesn't make sense to me, as other members of my project team all end up checking files out as if they were me. How can we set things up so that each team member uses their own userid to connect to sourcesafe, yet the project file is also maintained in sourcesafe?

Thanks,
Tim Dallmann

Thanks for pointing this out: the rationale for storing the user name was
to suggest the source control provider to fill the user name with the
wanted value in the dialog used to ask for the password. In your case,
evidently, the user account stored in the project has no password
associated, and this makes Studio silently log in every member of your team
with the same userid.
To make it short, we'll remove the user name from the project, as the
benefit does not compensate for the drawbacks you are experiencing.

Thanks for the report,
Alberto

Can't you store the VSS user name in the project file in relation to the current system user? So it is possible for every windows user to login with his own VSS-user id.

By not storing the user name in the project, we now give the source control=
provider the liberty of choosing what will be the user name. Visual
SourceSafe uses the currently logged in user, and, if the SS user has no
password or the same password of the OS user, you will be logged in without=
any dialog box being prompted. You will see the user/password/database
password only if the authentication fails.
To test if the new behavior will have an impact on your current setup, try=
removing the <?User 'username'> entry in the project file, open the
project and tell us if you see a side effect (you may want to look at
Source Control | Source Control Properties to see which user has been
logged on)

I can't see any side effects and the user is the current os user as it should be.
