Hans-Peter KüchlerSubject: stylesheet changes and Visual Source Safe
Author: Hans-Peter Küchler

Hi,

I'm working with SS and Visual Source Safe from Microsoft. In SS I've unchecked the option "Save Scenario Meta-Information In The Stylesheet". So the scenarios are saved in the project file. But every time I'm adding a new scenario to a stylesheet, SS puts a new blank line before the last line (with the comment from eXcelon) into the xsl file. So every time I'm changing the scenarios, the xsl file is also changed. VisualSourceSafe sees every time a different file and makes a new file version because of the extra line.

This is fixed in 3.1 BL69q, available now from:
http://www.stylusstudio.com/update

Thanks,

Sorry, but this issue isn't fixed, the blank lines appear also with build 69q.

Hans,
maybe I didn't understand the problem then.

Running 69q, I open a stylesheet (settings tell Stylus not to save
meta-information in the file); I save it; I check it with an editor, it
has, say, 66 lines and the Stylus Studio copyright is on the last line. I
keep saving it, and the document has still 66 lines with the Stylus Studio=
copyright on the last line.

If this isn't the right way to reproduce the problem you mentioned, can you=
give me more details?

Thanks,
Minollo

Minollo,

you have to create a project with an xsl file as member. Please unzip the ErrSS.zip file and open the project ErrSS.prj. Open the ErrSS.xsl file. Chose "Create Scenario..." from the drop down box. The scenario dialog box appears. Select the ErrSS.xml file for the "Source XML URL" field. Leave all other fields unchanged. Press the OK button. Press ALT+F4 to end up SS. The dialogbox "Save Documents" shows both the prj file and the xsl file as changed. Save both files an look into the xsl file with an editor (I'm using UltraEdit). Every time you do these steps a new blank line appears before the comment in the last line.

Hans,
I tried (and I had someone else try with me to make sure I was not crazy)
following step-by-step your instructions. I was able to reproduce the
problem using a pre-BL69q build, but not with BL69q...

The first time you save it, I can see the copyright information move (after
the final newline rather than before); that happens only the first time I
save it (which makes me think you saved the file not with 69q...), but the
file never grows, and never changes after that.

Have you double checked that your 69q installation succeeded? If you do
Help|About, are all the components listed as 69q?
(it may happen that if some DLL is locked for any reason - maybe a ghost
Stylus Studio app running - the files are not properly updated by the
installation procedure).

Thanks,
Minollo

Sorry, I've checked it with build 69q only one time. After the second time adding a scenario the xsl file is marked as changed (the last dialogbox "Save Documents" lists still both files, the prj file and the xsl file) but the content of the file isn't changed. But the xsl file is saved and the time stamp of the last change is updated.

Ok; this makes more sense. Yes, we are aware of that; the fix is less
trivial (and less important?) than avoiding to have the file grow at every=
save.
Anyway, SourceSafe is smart enough to avoid creating new versions of the
file if the content hasn't change.

Minollo

It's not necessary to change the behavior of SS 69q. As you wrote, VisualSourceSafe doesn't create a new version if the contents isn't changed.

Thanks, Hans-Peter
