JD McLeanSubject: I want to automatically check that xml data follows certain rules

Before I spend too much time learning this system I would like to know if the following is possible or if I am misunderstanding the purpose of the product.

In my company we generate an xml file after every job. This is created using a proprietary program. Following each job the file is reviewed for errors before being sent to corporate. The majority of this checking could be done with simple logic, and cross referencing.

The problem is that we struggle with the massive amount of files that need review. Currently we are six months backed up, with a required turnaround time of 1 day.

My goal is to create a filter that any employee can run on any of these xml files to quickly flag any errors.

Some examples of the kind of thing I expect to filter:
-Does the serial number of a part on the xml file match our inventory
-is a value in one field equal to another
-is the date in one field after the date in another

Then I would like to have this data exported to a report that could be view on any computer (internet, text file, whatever)

I would like this to be a stand alone program or website that I could setup and distribute to our thousands of employees. The process would have to be as simple as >browse for file > filter this file > generate report.

The problem is that I am in the oil industry so my people are not computer literate, and every computer we use gets completely re-imaged from a stock image about once a week.

Can I do this?

Also I have no idea how to create a target document in xquery. I have loaded an xml file and created the right side of the FLWOR.... but now I'm stuck.

And in relation to my other question previous: What I was asking was if this program creates any end user applications. For example if I created an Access database, I would make a forum for users. Or if I was using VBA my end user would use an excel sheet or a userforum.

I hate to be a bother, but my company needs to know if I want them to buy this program for me ASAP.

I realize the people who answer these forums have way to many threads to reply to, but if possible I would really appreciate it.

I work for a large multinational Oil Company called Weatherford Drilling. There is a good chance this could result in a substantial purchase.

DataDirect XQuery seems to fit well your set of requirements; it can take care of validating data based on data contained in a single XML, or across multiple XML documents or across XML and databases. And you can use XQuery to create a report; the easiest output format to obtain would probably be HTML, but you could also create Excel (2007) spreadsheets as easily. DataDirect XQuery is not an end-user facing tool, and Stylus Studio isn't either; but you can easily use them to create something that is easily wrapped as a end-user solution (as an HTML-based service, or a standalone application).

If you like, we may be able to help you getting started if you share with us some sample documents and a description of what kind of checks and output you would like to see performed and generated. If you are interested, feel free to contact us at stylus-field-report at progress dot com, and we'll ask our sales folks to contact you to provide all the details you may need.
