Don CloreSubject: Stylus Studio fails with 'The JVM initialization failed with a fatal error: Error occurred during initialization of VM Could not reserve enough space for object heap
Author: Don Clore
Date: 12 Feb 2013 12:15 PM
This happens whenever I try to open any sort of file or project. Please do not point me at the other message from the other person who experienced this in August; I tried using the JRE he referenced in post, downloaded, installed, no help.

If this is a JRE/JDK install / configuration issue, then I urgently need precise guidance as to how to set things up for Stylus Studio properly.

Windows 7 64 bit.
Stylus Studio X15.

I am not sure what has changed such that this has started happening.

This is relatively urgent; please respond.

more info:

I have JDK's for 6 and 7, 32 and 64 bit installed.

c:\jdk.1.7.0_13_64
c:\jdk.1.7_0_13_32
c:\jdk.1.7.0_11_64
c:\jdk.1.7_0_11_32

c:\jdk.1.6.0_38_64
c:\jdk.1.6_0_38_32

HKLM\SOFTWARE\JavaSoft\Java Runtime Environment\CurrentVersion = 1.7

I have used AutoDetect at Struzzo's tools/options/Java Virtual Machine to point at 1.7

It seems like that JVM is set to initialize the memory heap to a size larger of what is available in the system.

Could you post the value you have set for the Parameters field, in the JRE group?

a question: is Stylus Studio loading the 32 bit jvm, or the 64 bit one? The Windows VM in question (this is actually Windows running under VMWare Fusion on an iMac) has 8 Gigabytes of RAM allocated to it.

Stylus Studio is 32 bits application and uses 32 bits Java Virtual Machine.

The registry entry for 32 bits applications under 64 bits Windows is

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\
-SOFTWARE\
--Wow6432Node\
---JavaSoft\
----Java Runtime Environment

I will contact you offline to speedup the communication.

fyi, I looked in the WOW6432 node, the default was empty; I set it to 1.7, which was one of the available values. It didn't fix it; behavior is unchanged (I know you didn't suggest I do this; just letting you know).

are you having trouble contacting me through my regular email? I only ask since the response on this forum thread came almost right away, but I've heard nothing on my email for several hours.

I know you may not be able to get to me right now; just hoping you get set expectations as to ETA. Thanks, Don

I sent several messages to your gmail account
May be they have been caught by the spam filter...

you're right, thanks. Gmail didn't like you. I've instructed it to be nicer to you, and I replied to your email message; still joy, but details are in that message. Thanks.

After discussing offline we have determined that the system PATH included a library which prevented Stylus Studio to load the Java Virtual Machine.

Thanks Don for working with us
