Mark MaltbySubject: Functions

I would like to know if it is possible to create functions in xsl's. The xsl's I have created so far are very long and un-managable due to me copying and pasting the same code across a style sheet. I would like to know if it is possible to create functions for common functionality. If this is possible, how far does this extend. Can you pass in parameters or have values returned(I doubt the returning part but it would be good to know)? Below is a simple example which I need to be able to put into a function. The varaible part I would like to pass into the function, as this part changes.

Many Thanks in advance.

<xsl:when test="node[number()=$var]">
<xsl:value-of select="node"/>
</xsl:when>

XSLT 1.0 allows you to modularize code into templates; you can create matched or named (or both) templates, that you can invoke explicitly, or that are invoked by the underlying matching processor. See

XSLT 2.0 allows you to also create functions that you can use as part of your XPath expressions.

Both mechanisms allow you to specify parameters. See http://www.w3.org/TR/xslt or http://www.w3.org/TR/xslt20/ for more details.
