John ShaeningSubject: Text File to XML
Author: John Shaening

I just downloaded the Demo version of the product and was curious
as to how the .conv file distinguishes between multiple row types
in a given file. I receive main-frame style text files that have
Multiple record types which each have their own field layouts.
For Instance
001A000This is name This is Address
002B000Record type B description goes here

A typical file might have a record type A, B, C etc. In many cases
the next group of rows might not have a type C record.

Thanks in advance for your help.

In the current release, there is no way to distinguish those records
for the output; it would have to be handled by the consuming XSLT or
XQuery.

In the next release, you will be able to map by row prefix, which
should do exactly what you want.

In following up on this old message, I'd just like to
point out that the current version of Stylus Studio
XML Professional 6 Release 2 now contains the ability
to handle this case.

Great news. I downloeded this version, but cannot find how to do this.
Can you provide me with an example or some tips on how to apporach this?
Thanks in advance,

Frank Nolden

Hi, Frank. Video demonstrations of the Convert to XML module are available on our web site, here:

The User Guide is also available on the web site, here:

Thanks for your reply David, but that is not exactly what I was looking for.
I need to match records against patterns, but then divide these rows in fields.
The fields separation is based on fixed length and can vary between the
matched records.
I am told that this is not in the current version, so bad luck.
Thanks again.
