Hans-Peter KüchlerSubject: SS4.6 103s: Error Setting Default Extension
Author: Hans-Peter Küchler

I'm using another editor as standard XML and XSD editor. Every time I start SS, SS writes itself as the standard editor for XML and XSD files. I must open options|default extensions and uncheck .xml and .xsd. This works fine until next start of SS. Now SS is again the default editor and so on...

That shouldn't happen (well, at least I can't reproduce it); are you sure
after the change in the Options|Default Extensions page is done you make
the other application register those extensions?
Stylus makes no attempt to own the extensions out of the Options dialog
where you ask it to do that.
Can you send me/attach the content of these registry keys after exiting the
Stylus Studio Options dialog?

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.xml
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\[Default value for the above .xml]

Thanks,
Minollo

Hi,

here are the registry values. xml-before-start.reg is the contents before starting SS. These values are right for me. xml-after-start.reg are the values directly after starting SS, without any user interaction. SS has changed the default value. I'm working with NT4.0sp6

At startup Stylus Studio goes through the extensions that are registered in
its name to refresh it's path location and icon settings; to decide if an
extension is "owned" by Stylus, the application checks the
shell\open\command key in the type file set as the .ext typefile (its
default value).
In your case, you have this one:
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\xmlfile\shell\open\command]
@="C:\\PROGRA~1\\EXCELO~1\\STYLUS~1\\bin\\Struzzo.exe \"%1\" /dde"

Stylus finds it, and it assumes you are using it as your default file
extension association; and in the process of refreshing its settings, it
sets "stylustudiofile.xml" to be the new file type associated to ".xml"...
(we use a different file tipe name, like "stylusstudiofile.xml", to let you
"undo" the association between Stylus and the extension...)

We'll think about how to improve the application behavior to avoid the
problems you are experiencing; in the meanwhile you may want to delete or
modify the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\xmlfile\shell\open\command default value so
that it doesn't mention "struzzo.exe"; that will prevent Stylus from
refreshing what it believes is "its" file extension.

Hope this helps,
Minollo

I don't understand why SS works so hard with the registry every time it starts. But the only thing I've to do is renaming the subkey "open" to another word ("openStylus"). And the only thing the programmers have to do is looking for the default value of the subkey "shell". If there is nothing, then open is the default key. But if there is a string, then the subkey with the same name is the default key (not open) and SS shouldn't change anything.
